ZigBee and 802.15.4 Shipments to Reach 2.5 Billion by 2020 ZigBee is dominating the IEEE 802.15.4 ecosystem and is set to lead the smart home Internet of Things market. Annual shipments for IEEE 802.15.4 low power wireless chipsets doubled in 2014 and is on track to increase by 550% by 2020. ZigBee standards will be used in 80% of the 802.15.4 annual chipset shipments at this time. ZigBee PRO has the largest market share of the 802.15.4 protocols today, with wireless mesh networking, advanced sensor applications and industry designed profiles developed over the past decade. In five years, ZigBee PRO will be used in over half of all IEEE 802.15.4 shipments with most of the growth coming from smart home and smart lighting in particular. Key drivers include: * Plummeting costs for low power wireless chipsets * Smart lighting adoption increasing by 2900% between 2012 and 2014 * Nest's acquisition by Google * Thread, an IP based wireless mesh specification * ZigBee 3.0 that will unify Zigbee standards By 2020, more than 2.5 billion IEEE 802.15.4 chipsets will have been sold worldwide and over two-thirds of the annual shipments will be for smart home applications at this time. In this report-- our 11th edition-- we analyze the evolving market forces, technology advances and competitive dynamics for 22 unique WSN markets and provide 5-year forecasts for 802.15.4/ZigBee and competing alternatives including WiFi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, EnOcean and others. It also includes key findings from a recently completed survey with 1,000+ consumers and an extensive analysis of hundreds of ZigBee/802.15.4 products.
